Safest Ways of Feeding Your Horned Frog

One of the concerns that pet owners have with their exotic pets is how to feed them. Unlike dogs or cats, you cannot simply leave a bowl out and expect them to feed themselves when hungry. Frogs should ideally be fed live insects or other small animals as it best matches their hunting instincts of the wild. However, you should be able to do that safely to make sure your strawberry-horned frog and others get adequate nutrition. Here is how you can do so.

Feeding Your Horned frog

Trying a Feeding Tong

While feeding your horned frog, you can use stainless steel feeding tongs. They are by far the safest methods of providing your frog, especially if you have just got the frog and are still unsure where to look for food in its new enclosure. The feeding tongs allow you to handle the insects with ease.

Handling worms and roaches with hands alone can be messy, even if you are wearing gloves. The tongs enable you to hold the feed right up to the mouth of your frog without the risk of being bitten or getting their sticky tongue on your hands.

Keeping a Food Bowl

Once your frog has got used to its environment, you can keep a food bowl on one side of the enclosure. However, it would be best to choose the meal inside it with care.

Critters like grasshoppers and crickets will get out of the bowl and crawl all over the enclosure and might also get out of it if the frog does not eat them within a short span. However, you can try this method if you are going to be away for a longer span and there is no one else to feed your frog.

Using a Food Net

A food net is like a small bundle that you can lower in the enclosure of your frog, and they can eat out of it through the gaps. The perforations in the net have to be of the ideal size, though.

It should be small enough to hold the critters inside, but your frog should also be able to pull out the critters when they want to feed. A food net is an excellent option to prevent live critters from crawling away, but you should only choose after considering whether your frog will be able to eat out of it.

Using stainless steel feeding tongs is the safest method. Just make sure the critters are sourced from premium exotic pet websites to ensure wholesome nutrition for your frog.
